North Packery Channel Beach
The dividing line between Mustang Island and North Padre Island is the Packery Channel. The channel has
brought easy access to the Gulf of Mexico by boat for all who come to visit or live on North
Padre Island and Mustang Island. The north beach at Packery Channel begins Mustang Island as
you come from Padre Island. This beach is accessed by Zahn Road which is paved and located next to the Packery Channel bridge. Zahn Road also offers
access to two boat ramps which provide access to launch boats directly into the channel. These ramps provide immediate access to
inshore or offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.
Entering North Packery Channel Beach on Zahn Road from State Highway 361 finds the
beach community of Tortuga Dunes to the north. On the south side of Zahn Road is a paved
raised road that leads to a paved parking area and two boar ramps. A 20 acre park is planned for the North Packery Channel on Mustang
Island.
The beach at North Packery Channel is large and has plenty of driving space. This beach draws very large
crowds beginning with Spring Break on Mustang Island and through the Summer months. The beach
provides access for fishing the North Jetty on Packery
Channel. Also popular at this beach is kite surfing and surfing when the winds or
swells in the Gulf of Mexico are from the South or Southeast.
Driving north toward Port Aransas and away from
Corpus Christi and North Padre Island beaches
you will continue on undeveloped beaches for several miles. Access back onto State Highway is
by Newport Pass Road or Beach Access Road 3 before coming up to the no vehicle access
point at the southern end of Mustang IslandState Park. The
drive from North Padre Island to the Mustang Island State
Park is about five miles along the beach or by driving on State Hwy 361.
