JFK Causeway and Bridge
The
JFK Causeway provides access to the island from the city of Corpus Christi. The
causeway and bridge cross over the Laguna Madre and Intracoastal Waterway.
Approaching from the city of Corpus Christi you can exit the causeway at the
"Humble Channel" exit and have access to a paved frontage road that runs at the
waters edge. This is a great area for viewing wading birds, pelicans and ducks
(in season)
The black skimmer may be viewed here at times. On the far eastern portion of the
road is a seasonal nesting ground for the skimmers. The nesting ground is not
used as much by the birds but still does have a few birds on occasion.
The JFK bridge crosses over the Intracoastal waterway connecting North Padre
Island to the mainland. Whether coming from the island or Corpus Christi there
are turnarounds which provide access underneath the bridge. Pelicans, great blue
herons, rosette spoonbills, ospreys and many other coastal birds may be viewed.
